Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji Prakash Purab: Remembering the Sixth Sikh Guru’s Legacy of Courage and Justice

The Prakash Purab of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, the Sixth Sikh Guru, is observed with great devotion by Sikhs across the world. The occasion commemorates the birth of a spiritual leader who transformed the Sikh community by combining deep spirituality with the responsibility of protecting justice and human rights.

Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji was born in 1595 at Wadali, near Amritsar, and succeeded his father, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, as the Sixth Guru at a young age. Following the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji emphasized that faith should always be accompanied by the courage to stand against oppression.

One of Guru Sahib’s most enduring contributions was the concept of Miri-Piri, symbolized by the two swords He wore. These represented temporal authority (Miri) and spiritual authority (Piri), teaching that a person should maintain a balance between spiritual devotion and the responsibility to uphold justice in society.

Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji also established the Akal Takht Sahib in Amritsar, which became the highest seat of Sikh temporal authority. From there, He encouraged Sikhs to remain disciplined, fearless, and prepared to defend truth and righteousness whenever required.

Throughout His life, Guru Sahib promoted equality, compassion, humility, and selfless service while inspiring people to resist injustice with courage and dignity. His leadership strengthened the Sikh community and laid the foundation for the values that continue to guide millions of followers today.
