Punjab Faces Record Power Demand as Heatwave Pushes Electricity Consumption Above 17,000 MW

Chandigarh: Punjab is witnessing an unprecedented surge in electricity demand as the ongoing heatwave continues to grip the state. Power consumption has crossed the 17,000 MW mark, setting a new seasonal high and placing significant pressure on the state’s power infrastructure.

According to officials, the sharp rise in temperatures has led to increased use of air conditioners, coolers, and other electrical appliances in homes, businesses, and industries. As a result, electricity demand has risen sharply over the past few days.

Residents from several districts have reported intermittent power outages, particularly during peak hours. The situation has also been affected by operational challenges, including disruptions in electricity billing and field services due to the ongoing strike by outsourced meter readers.

The Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has assured consumers that it is taking all necessary steps to maintain uninterrupted power supply. Additional measures are being implemented to manage the increased load and minimize outages during periods of peak demand.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised people to take precautions against extreme heat by staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and limiting outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.

With high temperatures expected to persist, authorities are closely monitoring the power situation and have urged consumers to use electricity responsibly to help reduce pressure on the grid.
