UPSC Meets to Shortlist Candidates for Punjab DGP Appointment
Chandigarh: The process to appoint a regular Director General of Police (DGP) for Punjab has moved a step forward, with the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) convening its empanelment committee meeting on Tuesday to prepare a shortlist of eligible officers for the state’s top police post.
According to official information, the committee is expected to recommend a panel of three senior IPS officers from a larger list submitted by the Punjab Government. Once the panel is finalized, the state government will select one of the recommended officers for appointment as the regular DGP.
The meeting marks a significant step in filling the state’s top policing position on a permanent basis. Punjab has been functioning under an acting police chief for an extended period, and the selection of a regular DGP is expected to provide greater administrative continuity and long-term leadership to the police force.
The Punjab Government had earlier forwarded the names of eligible senior IPS officers to the UPSC in accordance with the prescribed selection process. After evaluating the officers’ service records, experience, and eligibility, the commission will forward its final panel to the state government for the final appointment.
The identity of the officer chosen to lead the Punjab Police will become clear once the UPSC completes the empanelment process and the state government announces its decision.
