Centre Seeks Clarification from Meta Over WhatsApp’s Proposed Username Feature

New Delhi: The Central Government has sought an explanation from Meta regarding WhatsApp’s proposed Username feature, asking the company to provide detailed information before the feature is introduced in India.

According to officials, the government wants to review how the feature will operate, the safeguards it offers for user privacy, and whether it complies with India’s digital and data protection regulations. Until this assessment is complete, the proposed rollout of the feature is expected to remain on hold.

Meta has maintained that the Username feature is designed to give users an additional way to connect on WhatsApp without sharing their phone numbers, which could improve both privacy and convenience. However, the company will need to address the government’s concerns before any further decision is made on its launch in the country.

The government’s review is expected to focus on balancing technological innovation with user safety and regulatory compliance. Meta’s response and the outcome of the review will determine the next steps for the feature’s availability in India.
