Sonam Wangchuk Hospitalised After 21-Day Hunger Strike; Protest Intensifies at Jantar Mantar

Social activist and engineer Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi on Saturday after his health deteriorated during the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar. Authorities said the decision was taken following medical advice and in compliance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court for continuous medical monitoring.

According to hospital officials, Wangchuk is stable but weak due to prolonged fasting and dehydration. A dedicated medical team, including doctors and paramedics, has been assigned to monitor his condition around the clock. Doctors have recommended continuous observation and treatment until his health improves.

The police action has triggered a political and public debate. While Delhi Police maintained that the hospital transfer was carried out solely on medical grounds and under court directions, supporters of Wangchuk alleged that he was removed from the protest site against his wishes. Videos from Jantar Mantar showed police escorting him away as protesters raised slogans and objected to the move.

Adding to the controversy, Wangchuk’s wife reportedly questioned hospital authorities after she was not allowed to carry her mobile phone while meeting him. She also urged that no medical treatment be administered without the family’s consent and consultation with the doctors who had been monitoring him during the hunger strike.

The protest movement has continued despite Wangchuk’s hospitalisation. Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke announced that he would begin his own indefinite hunger strike in solidarity. Organisers have also confirmed that the proposed “Chalo Sansad” march scheduled for July 20 will go ahead as planned.

Wangchuk began his hunger strike on June 28, demanding accountability over alleged examination paper leaks and calling for education reforms. His protest has attracted nationwide attention, with students, activists, and political leaders expressing differing views on the government’s handling of the situation. As his health remains under close observation, the developments have intensified discussions on the right to peaceful protest, medical intervention, and public accountability.
