Major Boost for Farmers of Sangrur Constituency: ‘New Changal Minor’ Dedicated to the Public After Renovation at a Cost of Rs 1.20 Crore

Under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government is continuously undertaking development initiatives to strengthen the agricultural sector, conserve groundwater, and ensure the efficient and uninterrupted supply of canal water to farmers. In line with this commitment, the Department of Water Resources, Punjab, has fulfilled a long-pending demand of farmers in the Sangrur Assembly Constituency by completing the renovation of the “Rehabilitation of New Changal Minor of Sheron Rajwaha (Burji 0 to 11680)” project at a cost of Rs 1.20 crore. The renovated minor was formally dedicated to the public today.
The project was inaugurated by Punjab Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal and Sangrur MLA Narinder Kaur Bharaj. Speaking on the occasion, they said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government is implementing large-scale initiatives to strengthen and modernize the state’s canal irrigation network so that canal water reaches every field in a timely manner and farmers’ irrigation-related issues are resolved on a sustainable basis.
They informed that the renovation of the 3.46-kilometre-long minor will directly benefit farmers of the villages of Changal, Khillarian, Liddran, and Badrukhan. The project will significantly expand the area under canal irrigation. Earlier, only 587 acres of agricultural land received canal water; with the completion of this project, the irrigated area has increased to 1,920 acres, bringing an additional 1,333 acres under canal irrigation. The project will ensure an uninterrupted supply of canal water right up to the tail end of the minor, resulting in substantial economic benefits for farmers and enhanced agricultural productivity.
Cabinet Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal and MLA Narinder Kaur Bharaj stated that the Punjab Government is committed to promoting the maximum use of canal water and addressing the issue of declining groundwater levels across the state.
They further stated that the renovation of the minor will reduce water losses, lessen farmers’ dependence on tube wells, save electricity, and lower irrigation costs. The project will also support the Government’s objective of increasing farmers’ income while promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
They reiterated that the Punjab Government remains committed to strengthening the irrigation infrastructure across the state and will continue to complete similar development projects on a priority basis to ensure that farmers receive all essential irrigation facilities and agricultural infrastructure in a timely manner.
Among those present on the occasion were Boota Changal, Harjinder Singh, Sarpanch of Khillarian, Iqbal Singh Changal, officers from various departments, other dignitaries, and a large number of residents from different villages.
