Parliament Debates Anti-Paper Leak Bill as Political Differences Continue Over Student Protest Response

The Monsoon Session of Parliament witnessed intense discussions as the Lok Sabha took up the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. The proposed legislation aims to strengthen measures against examination malpractices by introducing stricter penalties, faster investigations and speedy trials through special courts.

The government has said the Bill is intended to improve the integrity of public examinations and act as a stronger deterrent against paper leak rackets. According to the proposed amendments, cases related to organised examination fraud would be dealt with under more stringent legal provisions.

During the debate, opposition parties raised concerns over the handling of recent student protests linked to examination issues. They called for accountability regarding the police response to the demonstrations and argued that these concerns should also be addressed alongside discussions on the legislation.

The proceedings reflected sharp political exchanges, with both the government and the opposition defending their respective positions. While the government emphasised the need for tougher laws to protect the examination system, opposition leaders maintained that addressing students’ concerns and ensuring accountability remained equally important.
