Heavy Rainfall Triggers Red Alerts Across Several States, Authorities Urge Residents to Stay Vigilant
New Delhi, August 5:
Continuous heavy rainfall has affected several parts of India, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue red alerts for multiple states, including Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Kerala, and other regions. Weather officials have warned of extremely heavy rainfall over the next 24 to 48 hours, with the possibility of flash floods, waterlogging, landslides in hilly areas, and disruptions to transport and essential services.
According to the latest weather forecast, an active monsoon system and favourable atmospheric conditions are expected to bring intense rainfall across several parts of the country. Authorities have cautioned that rivers and reservoirs may witness rising water levels, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas. Local administrations have advised residents living near rivers, streams, and flood-prone locations to remain alert and follow official advisories.
Several districts in Assam have already reported flooding due to persistent rainfall, affecting normal life in many areas. Water has entered residential localities in some places, while relief and rescue teams have been deployed to assist affected residents. Temporary relief camps have been set up wherever required, and authorities are working to provide food, drinking water, medical assistance, and other essential supplies to people impacted by the adverse weather.
In Kerala and Madhya Pradesh, continuous rainfall has led to waterlogging in several towns and cities, disrupting road traffic and daily activities. In some districts, educational institutions have been temporarily closed as a precautionary measure. Officials have also warned people living in hilly and landslide-prone areas to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.
State governments have instructed district administrations to remain fully prepared for any emergency. Disaster management authorities, emergency response teams, fire services, medical personnel, and local police have been placed on high alert. Rescue boats, emergency vehicles, and relief equipment have been positioned in vulnerable locations to ensure a quick response if the situation worsens.
The IMD has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into rough sea conditions in coastal areas and has recommended that people postpone non-essential travel to regions experiencing severe weather. Commuters have also been urged to check local weather updates before starting their journeys, as heavy rainfall may lead to traffic congestion, road closures, and delays in public transportation.
Weather experts believe the current spell of heavy rainfall is linked to active monsoon conditions combined with moisture-laden winds moving across different parts of the country. While rainfall is essential for agriculture and water resources, prolonged and intense downpours can create challenges for urban infrastructure, transportation, and disaster management authorities.
Officials have appealed to the public not to circulate unverified information or rumours on social media and to rely only on updates issued by the India Meteorological Department and local administrations. Residents have also been advised to avoid waterlogged roads, stay away from overflowing rivers and drains, and immediately report emergencies to local authorities.
Experts believe that if the heavy rainfall continues over the coming days, additional areas could experience flooding and transportation disruptions. Authorities are therefore closely monitoring the evolving weather situation and remain prepared to take further preventive measures whenever necessary.
The administration has assured citizens that all concerned departments are working in coordination to minimise the impact of the adverse weather. People are encouraged to remain cautious, follow official safety guidelines, and cooperate with emergency services to ensure their safety until weather conditions improve.
