India Records 7.8% GDP Growth, But Questions Raised Over Data and Methodology
India’s economy recorded a stronger-than-expected 7.8% growth in the April-June quarter of 2026, exceeding market expectations of around 7.1%. The growth was supported by manufacturing activity, investment and consumer demand.
However, the figures have triggered a debate among economists. Former Finance Ministry official Subhash Chandra Garg and former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan have raised questions about aspects of the revised GDP calculations and whether the headline growth rate fully reflects economic conditions.
The government has defended the figures, saying the updated methodology and revised statistical framework are designed to provide a more accurate picture of the economy.
