India Steps Up Peace Efforts: Jaishankar Says New Delhi in Touch With Russia and Ukraine

India is continuing diplomatic engagement with both Russia and Ukraine as it looks for ways to help bring the ongoing war to an end, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said during his visit to Poland.

Speaking in Warsaw after visiting Kyiv, Jaishankar said India remains in continuous contact with both sides and is examining ideas that could help reduce the intensity of the conflict and, ideally, contribute to ending the war.

India Backs Dialogue and Diplomacy

Jaishankar reiterated India’s position that the conflict cannot be resolved through continued fighting. According to him, dialogue, diplomacy and negotiations are the most practical route toward a lasting peace.

He described the war as one in which there are no real winners, while each additional day brings more deaths, destruction and wider economic costs. India, he said, wants international efforts to focus on finding a diplomatic solution.

Jaishankar’s Kyiv Visit

The remarks came after Jaishankar’s meetings in Kyiv with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. During the visit, India conveyed its willingness to support efforts aimed at ending the conflict.

Jaishankar subsequently travelled to Poland, where he held talks with Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski. The discussions included the Ukraine conflict as well as broader issues involving food, fuel, fertiliser security and global supply chains.

India Says Peace Requires Negotiations

Jaishankar also addressed questions surrounding India’s purchase of Russian oil. He argued that the war would ultimately be resolved through negotiations rather than decisions concerning individual trade flows.

India’s approach remains focused on maintaining communication with both Moscow and Kyiv while encouraging diplomatic efforts that could eventually lead to a cessation of hostilities.
